Days of note in February
Once again, here are public holidays, festivals and other events and observances to keep in mind if you happen to be traveling to Malaysia, Switzerland or the USA in February:
1st February 2009 - Federal Territory Day (MY)
The Federal Territories of Kuala Lumpur, Putrajaya and Labuan get this day off. Expect parades, firework displays and the like. Expect shopping malls and public transportation to be overflowing with people enjoying the day off by hanging out at the mall.

1st February 2009 - Super Bowl Sunday (USA)
Possible THE sporting event of the year here in the States, where two teams from the National Football League (let’s not get into the football vs soccer debate here… yet!) battle it out for the championship title and the Vince Lombardi Trophy. This year, the Pittsburg Steelers will meet the Arizona Cardinals. Many people plan get-togethers not only to watch the game, but also to watch the commercials that get produced just for this event. Last year’s most memorable one was the dancing lizard one, IMO.
2nd February 2009 - Groundhog Day (USA)
If you’ve seen the surprisingly rewatchable movie with Bill Murray, you’ll know all about the American tradition of getting the groundhog Punxsutawney Phil to predict whether or not the country will have six more weeks of winter, depending on if it saw its shadow that day.

8 February 2009 - Thaipusam (MY)
If you are in Kuala Lumpur, look out for the early morning procession of Lord Muruga’s chariot through the streets, accompanied by the amazing sight of Hindu devotees in a trance-like state carrying kavadis that pierce their skin. Batu Caves is the place to be, if you want to brave the crowds! [Lina has additional information on this day - visit her here! ]
12 February 2009 - Lincoln’s Birthday (USA)
Not observed throughout the USA, not even throughout Lincoln’s home state of Illinois, but certain federal offices will be closed on this day in Illinois to observe the birthday of the American President who abolished slavery.
14th February 2009 - Valentine’s Day (USA, MY, CH)
A Hallmark Holiday observed the world over, don’t plan on taking your date out unless you’ve got reservations! Look out for overpriced roses and candy.
16th February 2009 - Washington’s Birthday (USA)
A federal holiday honoring George Washington, the first President of the USA and “The Father of his Country”. Nowadays, many people erroneously call it Presidents’ Day, thinking it also honors Lincoln (observed on 12 February) and/or all Presidents. Nixon said so, but didn’t use the correct decree or something. Whatever. Many stores offer sales during this long weekend.

24th February 2009 - Mardi Gras (USA)
Prepare to be shocked by bawdy celebrations in New Orleans in Louisiana, or Mobile in Alabama, where folks let loose before the start of Lent. A parade of floats and eye-popping costumes of purple, green and gold; beads, feathered masks, and boas. If you’re into crowds, booze and unique atmosphere, head on down there and don’t forget to collect your beads! If you’re a Val Kilmer fan, take note that he will reign as celebrity king when the Krewe of Bacchus parade rolls through New Orleans on 22nd February, two days before Mardi Gras.
There are also month-long observances:
- Black History Month, (also be referred to as African-American History Month, or African Heritage Month) where contributions by people of this heritage are celebrated and remembered.
- Bipolar Awareness Month; do drop by atorturedsoul who blogs at Being Bipolar and show your support!
Anything I missed? February sure seems to have fewer events, and not just because it’s the shortest month of the year! Did you notice that I have nothing to report for Switzerland?
Do check back on the first of next month for the March installment of this series of holidays, festivals and observances of Malaysia, Switzerland and the USA, k?

“Groundhog Day” - surprisingly ‘re-watchable’ … nice reference babe. Great Bill Murray / Andie MacDowell movie.
Though not official, February is also “oops, we’re 1/12 through the year and already ditched most of our resolutions” time - better to recommit to them now than look back in June and say “forget it.”
Thanks for the mention.
Better get started looking for gifts as Feb 14th is near!
